Is cycling with music really THAT dangerous?

Listening to music whilst cycling has always been a hugely contentious topic. So today I’m here to settle the debate once and for all. 🤔 I’m going to test out three pieces of equipment to see if it’s a total no go or if there actually is a way to enjoy your tunes - or even a podcast - whilst staying alert on the roads. cheap Chinese EVs are not going to 'save the planet' - short-term, an incredible deal - but look closer. The parts are low-end, the factories are sweat-shops - powered by fossil-fuel generated power, the batteries are NOT 'UL' tested (ever had a lithium battery fire?)...Xi Jinping has an intention plan to 'make stuff as cheaply as possible and damn the environment' - Just last week, USA and Canada announced that they are NOT going to allow a flood or cut-rate Chinese EVs into their countries...You have to look LONG TERM.

    The lack of infrastructure is reason to build infrastructure, watching this video is painful in this regard. "if you are on road without cycleways"....... that is the problem for you.. Over here in The Netherlands we solved your problem by defining the Speedpedelec (and wide cycle lanes). Larger motor, 45 kmh max speed, need a helmet and insurance. Inside cities you are not allowed on bicycle-path. Personally I would have preferred a speedlimit on the bycicle path for everyone. If you want to go faster on an e-bike, go ahead, pedel!

    It gives me the ability to ride with my teen son who is ridding many miles a day and can go harder than I can, he can push it as hard as he wants and I can push as hard as I want and let the electricity cover the delta between the two levels of efforts. People don't like e bikes because it means more people are riding.

    the guy on the PURE is deffo falling off soon hes using it completely wrong to be safe, 1 NEVER stand foot side by side you have very little stability when going around turns 2. you don't rest your weight on the handle bars because you will cause the handle to react to bumps more and will put more shock into your arms so that would actually be more way more painful way to ride

    If I wear earphones with the music switched off I can hear people talking to me with no difficulty. So there's always the option of wearing proper earphones (not those silly ones that bung up your ears) with the volume turned down. You're quite right about wind though, it can drown out everything. So I like to use a rear view mirror as well.

    80 miles on a single charge in real world use is damn impressive. Not sure why the manufacturer felt compelled to make such a bold claim if it's not realistic. It feels to me like there needs to be a certification body that can verify ranges a consistent and scientific manner.

    I'm a lifelong road cyclist and for the last 5 years gravel biking. But I'm in my early 70s now and my joints no longer want to do as I'd like them to do. Recently I was at the bike show at the NEC Birmingham and got to looking at some e-bikes. The Estarli caught my eye and whetted my appetite. I didn't need much convincing and have ordered the E20.8 through my local dealer and which should be here in a few weeks. It's one of these decisions one instinctively knows is right. I'll probably upgrade the pedals and maybe the saddle. I'll also consider the range extender because I do like to go further afield. I love your videos Ellis and you should consider coming up to my home city of Edinburgh. A bit like Bath with its cobbled streets and and as it is built on seven hills there are plenty opportunities to try out your power modes. So I've joined the electric revolution and I'm looking forward to many more years of happy cycling.

    If you I ride eco and off when possible and the terrain is mild I have had over 100 miles on my Bosch 300w battery. It is rated at 45 miles but it's no harder to ride without battery assist than any other medium weight bike so I will never be stranded. Use as little power or no power wherever possible. On canal towpaths and level roads the motor goes off saving power for when you need it most.....the end of a long day. Hint...you can ask at any cafe if you can top up your battery while you eat and offer to pay. Most I was ever charged was 50p for 45 minutes. Also most fire stations won't turn you away if you are in distress. There are some good people about. We were discussing today on forum about forming a voluntary network of charging points which I woul most certainly participate in. It's a golden opportunity for any pub, cafe, retailer etc to attract custom as well.

    The truth is almost no motor is built for 250w. Most are built for 500 or even 750w and RESTRICTED to 250w. Meaning it’s literally the exact same weight and size just less power. As far as 250w being what regular people can output on their own, that’s true but e-bikes are by nature less efficient and heavier than regular bikes. IMO a 250w e bike is barely worth getting over a regular bike. Just ban all e bikes at that point

Regardless of how much or how little effort you choose to put in, you’re outside adventuring and it has a giant positive impact on your well being. You can jog, walk, hop on one leg or ride something, long as you’re moving around outside it’s going to be beneficial to your fitness and health.

    I think the misconceptions about e-bikes just stems from an elitist mindset, mainly from loyal pedal bikers. I have tried an e-bike, and it's a real joy, especially on the hills that I negotiate everyday on my regular bike. But I still can't help the feeling that there's a bit of "unfair advantage" involved, even though I perfectly understand that allows e-bikes to be the bridge that allows people insecure about their cardiorespiratory capacity to embrace bicycles as a viable form of transport. The issues e-bikes have with battery use and maintenance also brings doubts in my mind regarding their sustainability. But at the end of the day, it's better than a car for your cardio, and you do you.

    The real reason e-scooters haven’t been legalised is for the following reason.. UK roads are full of potholes. E-scooter wheels are tiny. With both incessant potholes and tiny wheels, there would be accidents 24/7. Compensation claims would come flooding in to local councils. As they’re currently illegal to use in public, a user cannot make a claim if they hit a pothole and suffer an injury.

  • @georgemacdonald8899
    @georgemacdonald8899 2 дні тому

    Wow that's quite the challenge! Well done, an 80 mile ride is a long way. The wrong saddle or position can wipe you out over that kind of range. Even 20 miles on the wrong saddle or bike can do you in easily. Like a lot of things, long distance biking takes a while to learn and dial in. I'm very impressed!!!! It seems to me that a lot of things can affect range, going up hill, riding into the wind, gravel/dirt or other road conditions, some kind of friction on the wheels, i.e. brakes rubbing just a little, a wheel being out of true, tire pressure,... I focus a lot on the ease of wheel rotation on my bikes, I can rotate my wheels with a feather and they love to roll and roll and roll.
